Untold Indiana Black History
Comes to life through the story of Mary Bateman Clark
You are invited to attend the Re-enactment about her life at The Monroe County History Center 202 E. 6th St., Bloomington Friday, February 10th, 6pm.
Mary Clark won a State Supreme Court decision in 1821 freeing her from an indentured servitude contract held by a prominent Vincennes leader. The contract bound her to work for him without pay for 20 years. Slavery and indentured servitude were illegal.
But the law was ignored. Vincennes was once home to the largest African-American population in Indiana. Many black families were pioneer residents. Mary’s story is one of courage and fortitude, shared by those who helped her win freedom and set a precedent for others to win theirs.
Reenactments of the life of Mary Clark are available to groups, churches, organizations, corporations and schools. The reenactments are performed by great, great, great granddaughters of Mary Clark, Ethel Brewer-McCane and Eunice Brewer-Trotter.
