This flag has only 48 stars,
meaning it was created sometime between
July 4,
1912–July
3,
1959. The 48 stars each
represent one of the continental states. When Hawaii and Alaska were
added to the Union, the flag had to be changed to accommodate two new
stars. The United States flag has changed 26 times since being
officially selected by the original 13-state union; some changes
lasted no more than a year.
