This document is a searchable index of 1850 and earlier surnames from various sources. It will be added to from time to time. Its purpose is to supplement the lack of family details in censuses before 1850. The index in the case of a census would consist of noting every page on which a particular surname appears. If it appears one time it will be present here: if it appears twenty times it will still appear only once with the page reference. Unfortunately, with that criterium a family split across two pages of a census would appear twice but on adjacent pages.
