This large, lathe turned bowl is made of
poplar wood and would have often been used to mix and rise bread
dough. Although the wood for this bowl comes from a tree's trunk, many
early bowls were made out of burls. Burls are rounded outgrowths on
the trunks of trees and are still valued by artist for their unusual
grain.
