 Monroe County Map
By Julian Livingston

Below is my first pass at putting a map of the county on-line. While the township names are not written on the map they can be seen from the information included below the map. There is just enough section information written on the map to see the irregularities in the coordinate system down to the section (S#) level.

Monroe County, Indiana by 1836.
Boundaries unchanged since that time per
INDIANA BOUNDARIES by Pence & Armstrong,
published Indiana Historical Bureau 1933.

The modern township names are:
T10N,R2W=Bean Blossom
T10N,R1W=Washington
T10N,R1E=Benton (modern maps), Marion (old maps)
T9N,R1E=Benton
T9N,R2W=Richland
T9N,R1E=Bloomington
T8N,R2W=Van Buren
T8N,R1W=Perry
T8N,R1E=Salt Creek
T7N,R2W=Indian Creek
T7N,R1W=Clear Creek
T7N,R1E(+)=Polk
Note that a section number and township name does
not always locate property. It takes the township number,
the range number, and the section number. The "perfect"
or ideal township's sections are numbered as follows,
i.e., a township with no boundary irregularities:

06 05 04 03 02 01

07 08 09 10 11 12

18 17 16 15 14 13

19 20 21 22 23 24

30 29 28 27 26 25

31 32 33 34 35 36

Several of Monroe's named townships are irregular but the underlying grid system remains regular. That is the reason for putting a few numbers on the map displayed above and showing the ideal numbering scheme below the map.
