Barn Loom
Our barn loom, or four harness counter-balance loom, is around 200 years old and is still in working order. The History Center’s barn loom is 7 x 8 feet and the Bingham cabin, also on display at the History Center, only had a 17 x 22 feet interior – that means that a barn loom would take up almost a 6th of the home’s total floor space. Because of the massive size of barn looms, they were built to be easily de-constructed; the pegs and wedges that hold the loom together were easily removed for storage. Large looms were often shared among several households.
