This searchable database is provided, courtesy of the Monroe County
Historical Society, as a supplement to the meager census data
collected prior to the 1850 census. Should printed material or
substantial investigation of any individual found here be needed, please

In order to qualify for this list (recorded at the courthouse) the
applicant had to be fifty years of age and thirty years a resident of the
county on September 17, 1858. In the case of many of those
listed, the remark "Dead" was added. This was in the same handwriting as
the name entry so it is conceivable those individuals may have been
deceased at the time they "applied" for the listing or shortly thereafter.
Various modifications of the rules were added and appear within the list.
We regret the lack of alphabetization, but the "order" of the list is
presumably that in which it was taken from the applicants.
