The Monroe County Historical Society is continuing a project to record the military experiences of Monroe County veterans in cooperation with the Library of Congress.  The purpose of the project is to collect oral histories of war veterans.  According to Senator Lugar's office, approximately 5000 completed interviews have been submitted to the Library of Congress from Indiana (the third highest in the country).  Monroe County veterans have submitted more than 200 interviews.

Program coordinators have a special interest in those who served in World War I and II, Korea, and Vietnam, as well as Somalia, Desert Storm and Bosnia.  Interviews are not limited to combat veterans, but include those who served in a support role.

H.M. "Bud" Lynch, a Monroe County native, who served in the Army for 22 years in Korea and Vietnam, will conduct the interviews at the Monroe County History Center, 202 East 6th St.  If you are a veteran or you know a veteran who has not been interviewed, please consider adding your story to the project.  Men and women interested in sharing their memories should call the History Center at 812-332-2517 to set up an appointment.
